Various state and federal statutes grant consumers rights against businesses that commit fraud or deception, charge excessive fees or unlawfully damage a person’s credit rating.
Kansas Consumer Protection Act.
This law prohibits deceptive or unconscionable acts or practices in consumer transactions by a supplier of a product or service. Particular types of consumer transactions are listed separately and describe violations of the Act.
Missouri Merchandising Protection Act.
Generally, this law prohibits deception or fraud in connection with the sale, lease or advertisement a product or service in trade or commerce. There are specific types of sales or leases that are described in the Act to be unlawful.
Fair Credit Reporting Act.
This federal law requires accurate reporting of an individual’s credit history. An individual may request a correction of a report, usually to one or more of the credit reporting agencies.
Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
This broad federal law has application not only to verbal telephone communications, but also text messages. If there is an attempt to contact an individual through a telephone without the consent of the user of the telephone, there might be a violation of this law.
